Helps With:

Lemon juice helps to boost the immune system due to its high vitamin C (about 44.5 mg/lemon), antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antiviral and antioxidant properties.

Soothes sore throats.

Powerful liver cleanser and blood purifier.

Helps relieve kidney and bladder infections.

The folate in lemon juice is essential in preventing brain and nerve damage in unborn babies. Plus folate also helps to reduce your risk for getting colon or breast cancer.

Bioflavonoids are powerful antioxidants that help fight free radicals. Lemons are especially high in the bioflavonoid Quercetin which helps to boost the immune system and balance blood sugar levels.

Zeaxanthin and Lutein are two carotenoids found in lemons that help prevent blindness caused by macular degeneration.

Potassium, an important electrolyte, helps kidney function and is important for nerve and muscle health. Each lemon contains about 116 mg. of Potassium.

Lemon juice helps promote good digestion by stimulating the production of stomach acid which also helps ease nausea and encourages healthy waste elimination.

Even though lemons are acidic in general, once they have been metabolized by the body they turn alkaline and are important for balancing the pH levels of the body.

Lemons are beneficial in reducing wrinkles and anti-aging. The juice is also helpful in reducing acne.

Varicose Veins are soothed and eased by lemons internally, and the essential oil helps externally. Internally the lemons help reduce the inflammation and Vitamin C is known to speed up healing. Externally the essential oil also eases the inflammation, works as an astringent to tighten the blood vessels, improves circulation and strengthens the connective tissue.

Externally, Lemon essential oil (and the juice to some extent) can help fight off cold sores thanks to its antiviral property.

Tidbits:

Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning is a great way to help balance the pH in your body and to re-balance your electrolytes.

Limes are relatively similar in their medicinal properties to lemons.

It's best to drink lemon water through a straw since the acid is hard on your tooth enamel.

Freshly squeezed lemon juice is best since oxygenation can destroy some of the nutrients.

My very favorit-est way of squeezing lemons is this little handy device. I got mine at Wal-Mart for under $6. Super easy and extremely low maintenance! However...be warned that if you squeeze the handles together at the TIP...the whole handle may snap off!!!! Yes, I did this. Yes, it hurt. But now I know better and I press it together as close to the head as possible. :)

Getting More Lemon:
  • Drink the juice of one lemon (or at least half a lemon) every morning mixed in a glass of water.
  • Make homemade lemonade by juicing several lemons, adding water, ice and a little Stevia to sweeten.
  • Add some lemon juice to your tea.
  • Drink a tea made with hot water, lemon juice and honey.
