Car Winter Survival Kit

On our way back from Denali State Park a couple weeks ago, James and I got to talking about how we should each have an emergency car kit in our vehicles. Ya know, since we live in Alaska and all. We hear all kinds of crazy stories up here and we don't want to be one of them!

And not to mention that we have pretty good imaginations, so when it got all crazy stormy and dark out all of a sudden, we started talking morbid and scary situations. Okay, not really, I'm exaggerating. But we did talk about being stranded and freezing to death.

Not pretty.

So this is our solution. I'd love to hear if ya'll have any other ideas, or lists of what you have in your car for an emergency.

Emergency car kit:
  • First aid kit
  • Flares
  • Matches (waterproof)
  • Lighter
  • Gallon of water
  • Granola bars
  • Peanuts/cashews
  • Emergency blanket
  • Fleece blanket
  • Flashlight (hand powered)
  • Headlamp
  • Whistle
  • Candle
  • Pocket knife
  • Gloves X 2
  • Hat X 2
  • Wool socks X 2
  • Hand warmers
  • Sand
  • Shovel
  • Jumper cables
  • Tow line
  • Windshield scraper
  • Deck of cards :)

Last Christmas I gathered tons of free 3 gallon buckets for James because he uses them to go mining. I used 2 of them to house all of the goodies. Everything fit except for all the big bulky items. Super handy!

With this all set to go, firewood stocked, and snow tires on the cars we are ready for winter.

Bring it on.

  1. Very good there then, that you are ready as Freddy! GREAT LIST! But maybe you could add a deck of cards or a good book? Signed, Your Dad!

  2. Love, love love that idea! Didn't even think about how crazy boring it would be to get stranded/stuck. I will definitely add a few fun items. :)
